Army Ten-Miler Outing for Protective Underwear

One of the 30,000 runners who took part in this year’s Army Ten-Miler (ATM) event on Sunday, Oct. 21 in Washington DC at the U.S Pentagon wore a pair of boxer shorts which are helping to protect soldiers against blast injuries to the groin area caused by the Taliban’s roadside bombs in Afghanistan.

The ATM is the US Army’s premier 10-mile race which raises proceeds for Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) that supports Soldier and Soldier family programs.  British runner, Karen Davidson, crossed the Atlantic to take part in the race and wore protective underpants made from Kevlar called ‘Blast Boxers’ which are making a real difference to the safety of soldiers who wear them.  The Blast Boxers are made by UK survival and equipment specialists BCB International Ltd.

After finishing the race, Karen Davidson said: “I wore a pair of Blast Boxers because Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are the single biggest cause of deaths and injuries to our troops serving in Afghanistan, a significant number of which are a result of fragments and debris blasted to the groin area of the body. Any innovation like the ‘Blast Boxers’ that can help protect our troops from IED related injuries is to be welcomed.

“The BCB shorts felt completely comfortable. There was absolutely no sign of any perspiration and I found the fabric to be 100% moisture wicking. I never once felt that the shorts were heavy or restrictive when running the ten miles.”
