The suit chosen was the SPES Solandri, an advanced design on the previous model SPES MK3. The Solandri is a double layer, water proof immersion suit consisting of three main components, an ascent hood, an inflatable lifejacket and an inflatable suit fitted with polyurethane wrist seals, reinforced soles, foot and ankle straps, a leg pocket and neoprene gloves. The Solandri forms part of a larger range of submarine escape and immersion equipment manufactured since 1952 by the Survitec Group, including the SEIE Mk11 which has also had recent success, winning contracts with the Royal Canadian, Italian and US Navies. Designed to provide protection for submariners from a stricken submarine, Survitec’s SEIE product portfolio includes single skinned suits with integrated life rafts, escape jerkins, inflatable abandonment suits, external submarine life raft systems and freeboard extenders.
Survitec currently has in excess of 30,000 units of submarine escape equipment in use in the market place, and supplies to 30 of the world’s navies
