High hopes for new UAV at AUSA
A new Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) which James Bond would be proud of will be unveiled at the AUSA Show in Washington DC (22-24 October)
SQ-4 Recon UAV
British survival and protective equipment specialists, BCB International Ltd, have developed the SQ-4 Recon UAV, a device which fits in the palm of your hand and can be operated remotely by troops sitting in a control room thousands of miles away.
BCB International's Robotics Projects Manager, Barry Davies, said: "The SQ-4 Recon has been developed to help save the lives of our troops. We read a lot about how the larger TUAV(Tactical Unmmanned Aerial Vehicles), MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) and HALE (High-Altitude Long Endurance) systems play a key role in high-profile military operations, but their size makes them less well suited for deployment in dense urban areas or forested areas patrolled by our troops. The SQ-4 fills that capability gap.
“It can provide soldiers with instant information about the enemy’s movements, capabilities and any hidden dangers that may be lurking over a hill or inside a building. Weighing in below 250 grams (8.4 oz) it can cover a range of up to 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in less than 3 minutes and fly for 30 minutes. It can be easily flown using a tablet, which also displays the video and stills transmitted by its high resolution day/night camera. Its small size coupled with its 10 ultrasonic sonars means that it can be used to penetrate a building or narrow spaces as well as avoid objects.
“Flying silently, it can hover discreetly over a targeted area or 'perch and stare' using day or night vision. If the operator starts losing control or when the battery reaches 30%, the SQ-4 will automatically return to the launch point. The SQ-4 Recon is absolutely ideal for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance tasks."
BCB International Ltd will be exhibiting the SQ-4 Recon at its AUSA stand 3649
