L-3 Link Simulation & Training Announces Product Launch of SimuSphere HD-9™

ARLINGTON, Texas, November 28, 2011 – L-3 Link Simulation & Training (L-3 Link) announced today the introduction of its SimuSphere HD-9™, a low-cost, high-definition visual display solution that provides fast jet simulators with fully immersive training capabilities offered by the company’s HD World® simulation product line.

The initial launch customer for SimuSphere HD-9 is the U.S. Navy, which has purchased four upgrade kits to integrate with currently fielded F/A-18 Tactical Operational Flight Trainers (TOFTs). One of the SimuSphere HD-9 systems ordered by the Navy is currently integrated and operational at L-3 Link’s Arlington, Texas facility. All four upgrade kits will be deployed to Naval Air Station Oceana, Va., with the installation of the first two systems beginning in January 2012.

“SimuSphere HD-9 not only provides a low-cost upgrade to trainers currently integrated with SimuSphere visual displays, but also offers a cost-effective option for any fast jet simulator,” said Leonard Genna, president of L-3 Link. “By combining four advanced technologies – high-definition databases, image generation systems, physics-based processing and a visual system display – SimuSphere HD-9 offers a fully integrated solution that creates highly realistic and relevant fighter training environments.”

In support of tactical training, SimuSphere HD-9 enables aircrews to detect, observe, recognize and identify targets from the same distance as during an actual sortie. Aircrews are also able to use actual flight night vision goggles and experience real-world performance over a simulator’s immersive 360-degree field-of-regard.

SimuSphere HD-9 operates within the existing power and cooling facility requirements of currently fielded SimuSphere systems and has the same physical footprint and image generator interface. This commonality enables SimuSphere HD-9 upgrades to be achieved at low cost and low risk with minimal simulator downtime.
