UrsaNav Presents on “Improving Shipboard Inertial Navigation System Accuracy, Availability, and Reliability with Monolithic Ring Laser Gyros” at this year's Joint Navigation Conference

UrsaNav Vice President Jim Moore gave a presentation entitled “Improving Shipboard Inertial Navigation System Accuracy, Availability, and Reliability with Monolithic Ring Laser Gyros” at the Joint Navigation Conference (JNC) held June 7-11 in Orlando, Florida. The presentation focused on UrsaNav and Kearfott Corporation’s development of bolt-in functional replacements for current inertial navigation systems (INS) that interface with legacy sensors and systems. He also detailed our ability to provide legacy and weapons systems with the latest Monolithic Ring Laser Gyro (MRLG) capabilities.

These proposed replacement products, the UN-700™ and UN-704™, do not require shipboard modifications and have the same footprint and connectivity as existing

systems. Our INS solutions have no moving parts; require no calibration to correct for wobble; and don’t require pancake torque motors, slip rings, or multi-pole resolvers. Additionally, these products provide data flows that are never interrupted by rotation of the sensor assembly.

Specifically, the UN-700™ is a single SEANAV solution and the UN-704™ is a multi-SEANAV solution. Both products use existing shipboard cabling, affix to existing shipboard mounts, and use an easy-to-learn, menu-driven operator interface. The UN-700™ features one MRLG, whereas the UN-704™ has four.

The presentation also conveyed the advantages offered by the UN-700™ over the AN/WSN-7B and the UN-704™ benefits over the AN/WSN-7. Both designs feature an internal battery backup system based on a proven low-cost design currently fielded on the AN/SRC-40 and the UN-100™. These systems are designed for deep discharges, employ independent microprocessor-controlled battery packs, and possess a greater capacity than their counterparts. Moore further described both solutions’ power and equipment specifications and their value in numerous applications.
